In case you’ve never heard of the game, Shovel Knight was released a few years ago, and blew everyone away. When the market was saturated with retro-style games, it was a fresh look at the style. The mechanics revolved around you having this shovel, and literally digging yourself out of scrapes.

The developer, Yacht Club Games, announced today that the game would be getting a bunch of new content, along with a name change, new platform and a slight price increase. It was revealed on the developer’s blog page that there were would be a release for the Nintendo Switch, nearly three years after its initial release.

The main campaign will now be split into different versions, providing different entry points for players. There will now be three different versions of the campaign. Shovel of Hope, the original game mode, Plague of Shadows, which adds a new playable character and challenge modes, and lastly, we have the upcoming mode called Specter of Torment, which allows you to take control of the reaper, and is apparently their most expansive campaign yet.

There are also a bunch of new planned modes, like battle modes and character swap. It’s also important to note that the owners of the original game will continue to get these updates free of charge, but if you want the free updates you’d better buy quick. The price of Shovel Knight will be going up at some point in April.

It does my heart good to see a good game getting continued support over a number of years.

Keep on shovelling, Yacht Club.
