Song Review: Just Hold On

On Saturday afternoon, Louis Tomlinson of One Direction fame released his debut solo song, ‘Just Hold On’.

Following the tragic death of his 42-year-old mother Johannah Deakin, Tomlinson’s song, made with American electro house musician Steve Aoki, has taken on a real poignant tone due to the moving lyrics.

Some of the lyrics, such as “oh until it’s all been said / it’s not over until your dying breath” and “what do you do when a chapter ends? Do you close the book and never read it again?”, have significant links to the death of his mother. Mrs Deakin, mother to six other children as well as Louis, developed an aggressive form of leukaemia in May and passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Fans have since speculated that the song is a tribute to her.

What is unusual about ‘Just Hold On’ is its upbeat tempo as the lyrics taken out of the song’s context do not obviously match up. Nevertheless, it is still a great effort for the first solo single from the 24-year-old. He debuted the song on Saturday night’s final of X Factor as it was his mother’s “dying wish” to see him take the stage again.

Following the release of the track and Mr Tomlinson’s performance, fans have trended ‘#ProudOfLouis’ and ‘#JustHoldOn’. We are certainly proud of the 1D star’s bravery and send our love to him and his family at this difficult time.
