Microsoft has one over on the PS4 Pro it would seem.

Earlier this month, Sony decided it would leave plans for the newest version of the PS4 to have 4K Blu-Ray capabilities, and while the Xbox Scorpio is still in the dark, a Microsoft exec has talked about why 4K is so important, and if the Scorpio would have 4K.

He said: “Microsoft’s point of view on this is, the story is told in the product we’re shipping.

“We had to make those decisions long ago. So it’s funny how much people think we act or react to what Sony’s doing. But this decision was locked a long time ago.”

“We don’t sign up for every media format change. There has been a lot of SmartTV stuff and 3D, and they didn’t really set the world on fire,” he said. “I really believe in 4K and HDR. I have one myself. I thought I was going to regret it. I think it’s as meaningful an upgrade as it was going from SD to HD, when you start seeing the native 4K content. And so we were just really bullish on it.”

Sony’s reasoning for excluding 4K was due to the fact they saw a large number of their users streaming video, not using the disc drive for Blu-Ray.

Which certainly makes sense. The majority of people do indeed stream from a console or a desktop, so adding a 4K Blu-Ray player might just be a waste of money. Who buys DVDs anymore?

In response to Sony’s decision, Microsoft tweeted:

The PS4 Pro will be the same price as the Xbox One S, but we still don’t have any information as to how the console will perform.
