2016 has been an odd year for first person shooters. We’ve had DOOM, which was a joy to play, we’ve had Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Titanfall 2 all competing for the top spot. But while it may not be as heavy as some of the other hitters this year, this tweaked a nostalgia nerve.

Space Hulk was an early 00s late 90s board game, set in the year 40,000. And there is nothing but war. If you remember our Space Marine review from a few months back, it’s set in the same universe. The board game revolves around a group of elite troopers, clad in huge armoured suits, cleansing a space hulk (a form of starship) from the dreaded Tyranids. These creatures are a parasite-like race; they hollow planets, consuming everything, then move on to the next.

The game has taken on a few forms since the board game. A mobile app, a PC adaption, and now we’re getting a fully-fledged FPS.

Well
Well, ain’t that a punch in the face.

Check out the gameplay:

Oh, we got some aliens to destroy.

The gunplay looks heavy and punchy, less fast paced, simply due to the restraints of a massive suit of armour. It fits with the play style. Terminators are not supposed to be lightning-fast fire squads, but more tanks in the shape of a person.

The enemies show some decent variety, and the gore and damage effects look very polished.

Can’t wait to play!

When you purge in the name of the Emperor, just right.
