Yes, England has begun their journey to the World Cup by decimating Russia 6-0 in their first game. Goal scorers were Nikita Parris, Jodie Taylor, Jordan Nobbs, Toni Duggan and Lucy Bronze.

Russia played the game with 10 players, as Ksenia Tsybutovich was shown a yellow card on the half-hour mark for a handball. England was up 2-0 by 13 minutes, with Parris scoring and rushing to celebrate with the team’s manager Mark Sampson.

Sampson was in headlines in the build-up to the match, after allegations of bullying and harassment toward Chelsea striker Eniola Aluko. He firmly denies these claims, however.

England had 32 shots at the goal whereas Russia had a meagre five. They did outdo the British team in fouls, however, 14-8. Sampson said in after the match:

“We’ve really preached team togetherness and support for your team-mates since I’ve come through the door,”

There was a lot of focus on the way Sampson interacted with his team, given the recent inquiry as to why Eniola left the team.

But, the important thing is that he shot his team to victory this round.

In Group Three, the Republic of Ireland beat out Northern Ireland 2-0.

On to the next round!
