Now Something Totally Different

In a rather odd move, Tesco supermarkets will now stock green satsumas and clementines, to cut down on food waste.

The chain says the green oranges are still ‘perfectly ripe’ and will be as sweet as orange coloured ones. Higher early season temperatures contributed to the green skin, as it slowed down the natural process in which the skin turns orange.

Tesco is the first to sell ‘imperfect’ produce that is still good for consumption.

Other supermarkets have also branched out to sell produce that is less than perfect.

Satsumas and clementines grow as green fruit, but only turn orange in lower temperatures. In recent years, warmer temperatures during the early growing seasons for satsumas of September and October have continued to remain high, delaying the process where the fruit turns orange.

They’re still good nutritious veggies.

Tesco launched its ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ range in March 2016, which features apples, pears, potatoes, parsnips, cucumbers, courgettes, strawberries and frozen mixed berries. It’s a good way to combat food waste and is likely just as good as your standard stuff. Tesco’s aim is to sell all foods that are safe for human consumption in its UK outlets by the end of 2017.

Good guy Tesco, fighting food waste, one orange at a time.
