The Best Social Media Site

1 September 2017

By Lauren E. White

There are so many different social media sites out there it can be hard to know which one to upload to first. And for some people, it is hard to know which one is the most important for maintaining their online persona.

However, if we talk about the ‘best’ social media site, everyone seems to have their own opinion. Some jump straight to Instagram, others to Twitter, Facebook, SnapChat and Tumblr. So, which site really is the best?

5. Tumblr ()

Of our list of five social medias, Tumblr ranks the worst with two out of five stars. Why? Because it is boring.

On Tumblr it is virtually impossible to interact with any other users (which is the whole point of social media) unless you have thousands of followers and needy people wanting replies from you. ‘Big’ accounts don’t follow you and won’t talk to you.

Tumblr just seems a lonely place. You look at other people’s posts and reblog them because not everyone is a master at Photoshop, GIF-making or painting. It’s good if you’re artistically inclined, though, as there’s a chance to build up a platform.

4. SnapChat (✮✮)

Although it is a hotbed for underage sexual activity and the illusion that you take a picture and it can never return and hurt you again, SnapChat gains one star more than Tumblr.

When the app is used responsibly, it can be great fun and a very easy way to interact with friends. I use it to keep in touch with people I don’t see every day and who don’t go to my school. That way, I can see what they’re up to and I can talk to them quickly when I want to without having to send long Facebook messages to them.

However, it can also make you pretty lonely like Tumblr, but in a different way. If you’re not invited out to parties or places with friends, you can get caught up in watching them having a great time without you. To solve that issue, you can only have people you don’t see each day on the app, or start changing your mindset on your friends going out without you. Or both.

3. Instagram (✮✮✮)

This is definitely an unpopular opinion, but out of five, I give good old Insta a three-star rating. This is because of its unrealistic standards: you don’t see anything other than self-glorification on Instagram or selfie after selfie after selfie.

However, it does have its merits as Instagram can be a visual diary. It is for me, anyway. The places I go to are on there and lots of my happy memories too, rather than meaningless photographs designed to boost my number of followers.

Instagram is also better than SnapChat because you can upload photos that stay on the app for as long as you want (as in forever) and have a ‘story’ option so that posts disappear, like on SC.

2. Facebook (✮✮✮✮)

Even though less young people seem to be posting on it, Facebook will always have a special place in that social media world. It is the most relevant one we have because when you meet people, you always ask them for their Facebook, then their SnapChat. Everything else comes later.

Facebook is also good for keeping in touch with friends you don’t see often as they might post something which triggers you to message them. On Facebook you get to see people grow up and get on in life which is always a pleasure.

The only issue with Facebook is the amount of crap shared by people. Sometimes, when people share so many stupid videos every day, you’ve got to hit that ‘unfollow’ button.

1. Twitter (✮✮✮✮✮)

And, finally, the best app of them all: Twitter. This is what real social media is.

You can connect with anyone from around the world in seconds without it being creepy. For example, if someone replied to your Facebook post about Jeremy Corbyn who you weren’t friends with, it would be weird. But if on Twitter someone replied, you accept it and debate them (or agree, which is always nice!).

Twitter is also obviously the best app because it forces people to be concise. 140 characters means you get a lot more laughs and serious points than you do on Facebook where people spend so long recounting their day you have to press the ‘see more’ button.

If you want news, humour, little life updates and conversation (the definition of social media), then Twitter is for you. And it is the best social media out there.
