The Joker. A character shrouded in mystery and murders is getting a non-canon origin story from Martin Scorsese and The Hangover’s Todd Phillips. The film will also be co-written by Scott Silver, who worked on The Fighter and 8 Mile. The film will be totally separate from the current goings on of the DC expanded universe which still has Jared Leto as the Clown Prince of Crime.

This will be a film in its own vein of movies, so we could very well see some other non-canon films. The actor for the standalone Joker movie will be recast, which could mean we get someone younger and less annoying.

One of the most intriguing parts of this whole thing would be the setting. We’re looking at a Bat-less Gotham City, in the early-80s. This could help separate the film even more from the canon series of movies. I like the idea of a standalone movie because heaven knows we haven’t had one of those in ages. Everything has to be connected.

If we get a decent, standalone movie, that would be really cool. Something contained and comfortable in its own skin, instead of the trash (apart from Wonder Woman) that DC is currently spewing out of its maw.

A script is in the works, but there is no release date, nor any actors attached to the project yet.

We will see. Plus, if this gets a decent reception we could get other movies in this experimental space. Russian Superman anyone?
