Considering that the English are renowned for being overly cautious and the French even voted themselves the “most arrogant European country”, comparing France and England with regard to politeness is possibly similar to comparing Mount Everest to a small molehill with regard to gradient; one is lacking and the other is way too excessive. So how polite should we be? Should we carry on being overly polite? Or should we take a leaf out of France’s book and worry more about ourselves? To answer this question, we will respond to a serious of scenarios with the attitudes of each country.

Trying to make your way through a large crowd-

England: Oh God… Sorry, excuse me, pardon me… Sorry, was that your foot? I do apologise… Forget it, I’ll just stand still until everyone goes away.

France: Isn’t this the perfect time for a cigarette? Hm, maybe if I take a run at the crowd I can force my way out? Let’s do it.

Queuing-

England: There’s nobody else waiting for the cashier… I know, I’ll form a queue of one until the cashier calls me.

France: Why are they all standing in a random line? They probably don’t want to buy anything. I’ll just go around them.

Personal space-

England: Alright, I must remember to retain at least one metre between myself and the other person. Oh my God, they’re going for a handshake. Not a handshake, please no… oh lord, it’s happening.

France: Marie! Jacques! Come here while I smother you in kisses to express my affection and make you feel loved and welcome!
