The McStrike has McStarted

McDonald’s workers in Cambridge and Crayford are making history today by staging the first ever UK strike at the fast food restaurant.

The strike began at midnight and will last for 24 hours as workers demand McDonald’s grants them stronger union rights, better working conditions and a wage of at least £10 an hour, the amount of the calculated Living Wage.

According to the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union, staff also want more secure jobs which relates to them being employed on zero-hours contracts. On these contracts, workers can be called in with very little notice and they are not guaranteed a fixed income from one week to the next.

Ian Hodson, president of the union, said: “We fully support the historic decision by these brave workers to stand up and fight back against McDonald’s – a company that has let them down one too many times.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has also backed the industrial action by workers, calling it “brave”.

“Our party offers support and solidarity to the brave McDonald’s workers in the BFAWU bakers’ union, who are making history,” he added.

McDonald’s have said that the strike relates to internal grievances, rather than pay disputes.
