The Most Proficient English Speakers in the World

Along with having around 400 million native speakers, the English language is the most widely learned second language with a total of over one billion people able to speak English worldwide. Both a remnant of the British Empire and a sign of continuing global influence (largely due to the United States), English has become the leading international language, used to communicate effectively on a world-wide scale.

The English Proficiency Index – run by Education First – measures the average level of English language skills amongst adults by collecting data through online tests.

As a whole, Europe was the most proficient English speaking region – indeed, the English language is the most commonly spoken language in the European Parliament, and this would probably be unlikely to change, even after Brexit.

Anyhow, here’s the most proficient English speakers in the world:

1. Sweden

Sweden came out top of the leader-board in 2015 with a score of 70.94 (out of 100) showing an improvement of 3.14 (π) points from 2014.

2. Netherlands

With a score of 70.58, the Netherlands ranks closely behind Sweden, although English skills have progressed slower the Sweden in the past year.

3. Denmark

With a score of 70.05 Denmark is another nation where English speakers would fit right in!

4. Norway

The first country in the list to drop below 70 points, Norway still records a very high 67.83 – a substantial 3.50 points increase of 2014.

5. Finland

The 4th Nordic country in the top 5, Finland recorded a very respectable 65.32 – ranked as very high proficiency.
