A musical legend, a fashion icon, and a beloved role model to thousands of fans, Prince’s shock death back on the 21st of April this year appeared to send the whole world into mourning. After months of speculation behind the surprising death of the musical icon, officials in Minnesota have finally revealed that Prince, aged 57, died of an opioid painkiller overdose.

After the body of the singer was found in an elevator in his estate in April, reports of his death failed to reveal any suspected cause of death, leading to months of speculation on the matter. The results of the autopsy, which were released on Thursday, have finally put an end to the speculation, but subsequently revealed yet another case of accidental overdose of a beloved celebrity due to self-medication.

It has been reported that the singer, who for many years suffered from debilitating hip pain, was said to have developed a dependency on medications to treat his pain, despite the fact that he was well-known for his healthy lifestyle and clean living. Authorities have not yet released information on how the singer came into possession of the synthetic opiate painkillers which eventually led to his death; however, the lawyer of a doctor who was planning to treat the star has revealed that Prince was in fact preparing to enrol in an opioid treatment programme.

The Carver County Sheriff’s Office is set to continue with the investigation into the death of the star with help from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. However, for now, the news that Prince died due to an overdose of self-administered fentanyl has finally put a rest to months of rumours and speculation.
