Sometimes going on holiday abroad can be a little bit too exciting, and you can end up with very severe sunburn after just day one. So, it’s important to be safe in the sun and you might even get yourself a gorgeous tan on doing so. Here are our B**P’s tips for getting a top tan:

  • Don’t sunbathe for too long – Your body produces a pigment called melanin, which determines your skin colour depending on the amount of sun that it has been exposed to. However, your skin reaches a cutting-off point when it can no longer produce anymore, and so at this point it’s pointless forcing yourself to lie in the sun all day.
  • Apply sun cream, and the right type – Many people believe that by not applying sun cream they’ll get a great tan, however this is most certainly not the case. If you’re pale skinned, your body won’t be used to the sun’s high rays and chances are you’ll end up burnt. So, when you do apply sun cream make sure you choose the right type. Factor 30 is usually the best option, as it filters 97% of UVB rays but it doesn’t have the thick texture of factor 50 that makes you forget to reapply as the day goes on.
  • Eat sun-friendly foods – Believe it or not, what you eat and drink can actually affect how well you tan. Certain foods are known to increase lycopene, the skin’s own SPF. Some good examples of this are tomatoes, or green tea. Even better, dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which helps to protect against sunburn. So, best get eating!
  • Avoid peak hours –  The sun’s rays are at their strongest between 10am – 4pm, so you’re most likely to get burnt during this period. It would be silly to suggest staying indoors for this length of time, but just be more careful during these hours and apply extra sun cream.

Hopefully that will prepare you to get a top tan, so what are you waiting for? Happy tanning!
