The Christmas and New Year celebrations are now over, and many of us have overindulged. So, it’s the perfect opportunity to take part in Dry January, as it might make you feel a little bit better about drinking too much over the past few weeks.

If you’re not already aware, the idea is to be completely free from alcohol throughout the whole month of January. Though, it’s important to remember that this is not an excuse to drink excessively throughout the rest of the year! Of course, all alcohol intake should be in moderation.

However, if you do want to give it a go we’re here to provide you with some hints and tips to make it a little bit easier.

  • Let those around you know that you’re taking part. Often, drinking occurs during social engagements. So, if you let your friends and family know that you want to cut back, they’re more likely to support you – they may even give it a go themselves!
  • Change your habits. You may be in the habit of drinking at a weekly pub quiz or cracking open a bottle of wine after a long day at work. Try swapping these habits for something else. You could still attend the pub quiz, but drink less, or swap your drink for a soft alternative.
  • Likewise, it’s important to keep yourself busy. If you’re doing something else at the usual time you would have a drink you probably won’t even think about it. Take up a new hobby, or spend some time looking after yourself.
  • Stock up on healthy snacks, instead of crates of beer. When there’s a good deal on down the shop you may be more inclined to stock up on alcohol. However, think how much you could save if you didn’t buy any at all. Or, how much better you would feel if you swapped these drinks for some healthy snacks. It might not sound great at first, but it’ll be worth it.

There are only a few more weeks to go, so keep it up. Good luck!
