Top Cat Used by Halifax
Share:
Halifax, the banking agency, have released an ad for their mortgaging services featuring Top Cat.
The advert shows the iconic street cat walking into a branch and trying to work his sly tricks to get a mortgage, which was the format of most Top Cat cartoons (the sly tricks part, not getting a mortgage).
The lady who works at the branch signs him up with the bank, because they’re that nice.
Here it is.

Weird, right?
But there is one slight problem. One that Twitter users are pointing out:

But while his critique is on point, he did also say:
(I think this advert is pretty smart)

And yet…
Intrigued by the use of Top Cat to promote Halifax mortgages. Top Cat lives in a bin. pic.twitter.com/UuKY5iEfll

Re those Halifax Top Cat ads, I'm baffled by the TV one, too. "We will happily give a mortgage to a tramp who lies about his income!"

From what I've seen Top Cat is likely to be a high risk borrower. I'm sceptical about any proof-of-income he could have shown the Halifax.

A spokesman for Halifax released a statement saying:
“We did a lot of research with customers and colleagues exploring the use of lots of different characters. Top Cat was the standout favourite with both groups.
“Warner Bros. Consumer Products were really open to us using him in our campaign. Customers and colleagues loved the humour of using Top Cat and his gang and in a serious category dominated by ‘slice of life’ advertising, the introduction of characters from popular culture sets us apart from others. We’re looking at other characters to feature in future advertising.
“No other bank could run this campaign. It reflects our personality and is a real celebration of how our friendly and down to earth colleagues support everyone – showing Halifax as the uniquely human face of banking.”
What a better way to show a uniquely human face. By using a talking cartoon cat.
