Tunes of the Week

20 April 2016

By Oisin

For this week’s picks we have an eclectic mix: from rap, to tropical house, to reggae:

‘Pop Style’ – Drake, The Throne

Drake released ‘Pop Style’ recently, just before he released ‘One Dance’. ‘Pop Style’ is a rap orientated track, with a minimalistic beat, that mainly consists of a deep bassline. The Throne (the name for JAY Z and Kanye West together) make an appearance too, with Kanye taking a whole verse. ‘Pop Style’ will definitely take off, given that it is the joint effort of three massive hip-hop names.

‘Go!’ – M83, MAI LAN

This is the second track off M83’s second album Junk. Slow verses delivered by MAI LAN fit between a light, faster paced chorus. True to his style M83 uses many different layers to create a complete sound.

‘Paradise’ – Matoma, Sean Paul, KStewart

As Kygo shifted away from the tropical house sound Matoma sneaked in and took his place! ‘Paradise’ features some generic verses and lyrics from Sean Paul and KStewart, but some great bouncy synthesisers carry the track, making me feel like it’s summer already.

‘Dreamland’ – Wild Belle

‘Dreamland’ is a the title single off Wild Belle’s, the brother and sister duo’s, latest album. It sees Natalie singing alluring vocals over a varied instrumentation. It is heavily influenced by folk, reggae and indie pop and even features the saxophone, which Elliot actually studied at university. Wild Belle’s sound is unique and is differently worth checking out.
