Tunes of the Week

Some huge releases and one cover make up the picks for this week!

‘I (feat. Dylan Brady)’ – vōx

LA-based artist vōx’s reinterpretation of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘i’ is one of the best covers I have ever heard. Vōx teams up with producer Dylan Brady to completely transform the track from top to bottom, creating a dark electronic backdrop for vōx’s silky vocals. Like all of the best covers, vōx’s ‘I’ stands alone, sounding like an original track.

‘This Is What You Came For’ – Calvin Harris, Rihanna

Superstars Calvin Harris and Rihanna have teamed up to create the second pick of this week. Harris seems to take influence from the success of Justin Bieber and Jack Ü’s ‘Where Are Ü Now’, especially as he treats Rihanna’s vocals as an instrument: chopping, looping, and changing them. However, despite following the recent trends, Harris and Rihanna’s track doesn’t sound jaded. With the two-step drop it actually sounds energizing and refreshing.

‘Man (Gang)’ – Skepta

Grime veteran Skepta doesn’t hold back on his latest single, where he discusses his haters, ‘fake ones’, and reps his Boy Better Know collective. From the vicious delivery to the booming brass backing, ‘Man (Gang)’ is an instant grime anthem.

‘Bored To Death’ – Blink-182

Blink-182 are back and their sound seemingly hasn’t changed. ‘Bored To Death’ is full of angst, self-doubt and double time drums; in other words, it is classic Blink. This is the first single to be released off Blink-182’s new album California which is due on the first of July. If the rest of the album sounds like this, it’s going to be great.
