Tunes Of The Week

23 February 2016

The picks this week are all Grammy winners from some of the biggest artists right now. If you have somehow not heard them yet, then it’s about time you did.

‘Alright’ – Kendrick Lamar

This track was a single off Lamar’s album To Pimp a Butterfly which won the ‘Best Rap Album’ Grammy. ‘Alright’ won Lamar a further two Grammys: ‘Best Rap Song’, and ‘Best Rap Performance’. It is typical of Lamar, fusing jazz and rap together. Lamar performed it at the awards ceremony, proving that it makes for a fiery live performance.

‘Where Are Ü Now (feat. Justin Bieber)’ – Jack Ü

Jack Ü, made up of DJs Skrillex and Diplo, played a large part in transforming Justin Bieber’s sound, with ‘Where Are Ü Now’ being the first release showing where Bieber’s career was heading. ‘Where Are Ü Now’ was the first single off Jack Ü’s album Skrillex and Diplo present Jack Ü, which won the Grammy for ‘Best Dance/Electronica Album’. The track won Justin Bieber’s first Grammy of his career, for ‘Best Dance Recording’.

‘Uptown Funk’ – Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars

Horrendously overplayed but with very good reason, ‘Uptown Funk’ won two Grammys: ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’. Ronson’s funk influence and Mars’s feisty vocals meant that the track sounded both familiar and original.

‘Bad Blood (feat. Kendrick Lamar)’ – Taylor Swift

Swift’s star studded ‘Bad Blood’ music video unsurprisingly won the ‘Best Music Video’ Grammy. It is a single off Swift’s 1989 which won ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ and the huge ‘Album of the Year’ award. This made Swift the only woman to win ‘Album of the Year’ twice with her own work.
