The Rich Kids of Instagram aired on Channel 4 over two weeks ago, and it is still causing a great deal of controversy today. The documentary explores the luxurious and often over-the-top lifestyles of many young multimillionaire heirs who thrive in flaunting their wealth on social media, as we find out what it’s really like behind the image. If you thought ‘rich kids’ like this lot were pretentious enough already,  wait until you watch the programme.

One of the rich kids that stood out the most was Lana Scolaro (@LanaScolaro), a 20-year-old that is known most for being pictured alongside Robin Thicke, with his hand up her dress – lovely! Of course, she posted the image on Instagram herself, later stating that she was unaware that the grabbing could be seen in a reflection. This led to the breakdown of his marriage, and a lot of hate for Lana. Here’s the image:

Possibly even more shockingly, Lana claims that she spends £15,000 a month on shopping alone. She even spray-painted one of her Hermès Birkin bags ‘by accident’ to make a great Instagram picture – bear in mind that this type of bag is considered to be the most exclusive in the world. When asked how much the average person (like us) spends per month on shopping, she suggested about £3,000 to £5,000. Yes, you read that right. Some of us are lucky enough to get paid that much a month, never mind spend it purely on shopping alone. It really does show just how far removed these ‘celebrities’ are from the rest of society.

Another that particularly stood out was Evan Luthra (@evanluthra), an app designer who loves to host yacht parties. Who wouldn’t enjoy partying in the sun with all of their friends? Well, that’s not quite the case for Evan, who admits that he barely knows any of the girls who have arrived at his party. It makes us question whether money really is everything.

Other particularly interesting moments included posing in a bathtub while your girlfriend throws money all over you and films it; lying on the bonnet of a Rolls-Royce with bottles of champagne worth hundreds of pounds; and even dressing to match your car. What will be next?

It’s interesting to note that a whole array of programmes have popped up on our screens over the past couple of months documenting the lifestyles of the rich, including Rich Kids Go Shopping and How to Be a Young Billionaire. This time last year, we were all watching Benefits Street and other programmes about poverty. It seems that we have all become immersed in the lives of others that are much more lavish than our own, and some of us are eager to become ‘Instagram famous’ ourselves. Unfortunately, we have the media to thank for this.

What do you think? If you haven’t watched the show already, you can catch up here.
