On New Year’s Day, we were graced with the gift of the tenth ever episode of BBC’s hit series, Sherlock. Instead of following the usual pattern, Holmes and Watson’s mystery was set in the Victorian era (sort of), as promised in the trailer.

We followed the story of Emilia Ricoletti, AKA the Abominable Bride, as she terrorised London with her disturbing crimes. Though not really ‘scary’, some scenes were quite intense in the episode, and had us on the edge of our seats. We later discover that the reason Emilia is so relevant to Sherlock is because her crime is so similar to that of super villain Jim Moriarty. Solving the Victorian mystery is key to solving the modern mystery.

The major problem we had with the episode was that we didn’t have a clue what was going on. As this tweet rightly described, “anyone who says they understood tonight is A) a liar B) seriously seriously stoned #sherlock”. By the end of the episode, we were left feeling a little lost and unfortunately for us, it will probably be another year – at least – before the next episode.

However, we did still really enjoy Sherlock. It was spooky, entertaining and full of the usual black humour. We’d recommend it to anyone but we advise that you try not to take it too seriously, or you’ll be racking your brains for weeks to come.
