Tyne Bridge Closed for Special Event

This Sunday, 29 October, the Tyne Bridge will be closed for a very special event.

From 1 pm until 8:30 pm, the bridge will be holding a special performance honouring the civil rights campaign.

This a free event, bringing together artists, performers and community groups from across the region as they commemorate the achievements of Martin Luther King, and his visit to Newcastle 50 years ago.

As well as speakers discussing the struggle for civil rights, there will also be a huge parade across the Tyne Bridge, which is expected to look a little bit like this:

This is set to be a fantastic event, so make sure you get involved!

However, if you are worried about travel on the day, here are the expected closure times of roads in the surrounding area:

  • Barras Bridge / Percy Street / St Mary’s Place junction – 16:15 to 16:30
  • Blackett Street between Grey Street and Northumberland Street – 16:25 to 16:40
  • Grey Street between Market Street and Mosley Street -16:30 – 17:05
  • Market Street at junction with Grey Street – 16:45 – 17:00
  • Shakespeare Street between Grey Street and Pilgrim Street – 16:30 – 17:05
  • High Bridge Street between Grey Street and Bigg Market – 16:30 – 17:00
  • Bigg Market between Pudding Chare and High Bridge Street – 16:15 – 16:35
  • Pudding Chare between Westgate Road and Bigg Market – 16:15 – 16:45
  • Fenkle Street between Clayton Street and Westgate Road – 16:20 – 16:30
  • Westgate Road between Fenkle Street and Pudding Chare – 16:20 – 16:30
  • Pilgrim Street between Market Street and A167 (Tyne Bridge) – 16:45 – 17:05
  • Worsick Street Between Carliol Square and Pilgrim Street – 16:45 – 17:05
  • Market Lane, full length as access from Pilgrim Street – 16:45 – 17:05
  • A167 (CME) between New Bridge Street and Gateshead Council boundary – 13:00 – 20:30
  • Quayside between Sandhill and Broad Chare – 16:10 – 16:45
  • Broad Chare between Quayside and the Live theatre – 16:20 – 16:50
  • Nelson Street between Grainger Street and Clayton Street – 16:00 – 16:40
