Valentine’s Day is used to sell cards and chocolate. It’s marketed to young adults as a chance to shower their loved one in gifts. So, here’s what you can do on a student’s budget.

We’ll start with food. People make a big deal over where you go to eat, with numerous restaurants boasting Valentine’s Day deals. But, consider this. The average meal at TGI Friday’s or Frankie and Bennie’s would probably come to £40-£50. The average meal del from Dominoes or Papa John’s is likely to come to about £20-£30.

Solution? You Buy a pizza, pig out in front of some films then spend the rest of the money on alcohol or…more food?

Pizza Hut knows whats up.

Another trope we should endeavour to get rid of is that of buying gifts. Not completely, but if you really loved your partner, you wouldn’t need an advert to tell you to buy a gift for your significant other. You’d do it because you love them.

Solution? Just buy them a card, with an IOU for the dishes, or say you’ll pay for their half of the pizzas. Sorted.

See? It’s vomit-inducingly cute.

Plus, you could just make a card quite easily. There are numerous tutorials online of how to make half decent home-made cards that your partner will likely appreciate a bit more than a generic Clinton’s card. Makes it a bit more personal and could save you a few quid.

Also, massive cards are tacky, and nothing will convince us otherwise.

Eugh.

Right, that’s everything covered really.

If you really want to stick to a budget, make a meal together. Nothing tests your love like trying to make macaroni and cheese together. And trying not to kill each other.

Happy Valentine’s Day.
