We Have A Date

The new (well, first and hopefully only) secretary of state for exiting the European Union, David Davis, has been outlining his expectations for our departure from the EU. He advocated ‘a brisk but measured approach to Brexit’ and with our new Prime Minister’s assurance that ‘Brexit means Brexit’, it is probable that Britain will have left the European Union by December 2018.

Having established our objectives for Brexit negotiations, Davis has said that Article 50 will likely be triggered before the end of this year.

In the meantime, Davis advocates negotiating trade deals with non-EU countries, such as China and India, as soon as possible, in order to help Britain reap the potential benefits of Brexit before formally leaving, and to make the transition to an ‘independent’ state much easier for the British people, and Britain’s economy.

As an ex-member of the SAS, Davis will undoubtedly command some respect in Brussels, but whether or not he will be taking a hardline stance on Europe remains to be seen. Although, as a long standing Eurosceptic, one would expect Davis will be keen to see ‘Brexit’ in its rawest form.
