After being refused service because of ‘inappropriate’ clothing, Geordie Shore’s Marnie has some beef with Miller & Carter Steakhouse. The 25-year-old tweeted this to express her outrage at the situation.

My first thought when I saw this was that Marnie was just moaning about not wanting to follow the rules. However I then went and checked the Miller & Carter website for information on the dress code and found that there isn’t really a dress code- just this vague sentence: “Smart-casual – or dress to impress if you fancy”. There’s no mention of tracksuits and jeans or suits and ties- rules are rules but Miller & Carter doesn’t seem to have any rules. Clearly, Marnie did not want to “dress to impress” (whatever that means) and that is entirely up to her. Miller & Carter stood by its decision to reject Marnie from the restaurant:

After reading some of the responses to both Marnie and the Steakhouse, I began to wonder if the whole concept of dress codes is entirely classist. After all, dress codes are just a written form of snobbery and in many ways, a method to keep people, who are not deemed socially worthy, out of certain places. While most Twitter users appeared to support Marnie, some used this opportunity to vent their own classist views:

In all my years dining at restaurants, I don’t think I’ve ever noticed/been offended by anything another person was wearing. Why? Because somebody wearing a tracksuit will not affect the quality of my meal or dining experience.

Sure, personally I would never dream of turning up to a restaurant in a tracksuit but that is because most of the time a meal at a restaurant is a celebration of something. If you have Geordie Shore money, dining out is just a daily occurrence.

Let’s end this with a quiz: Which of the following items of clothing are the best to eat a steak:

A- Suit and tie/Ballgown

B- Tracksuit

C- Onesie

D- Jeans and T-shirt

Answer- Trick question, steak can be eaten effectively while wearing any of these garments.
