What is a Socialite?

16 October 2016

By Joseph

“ Someone who is well-known in fashionable society and is often seen at parties and other social events for wealthy people.”

A socialite is a strangely paradoxical position to hold in society. They do not have jobs as such, yet they still earn an income. They do not work, but at the same time they do. Organisations pay thousands – if not millions – of pounds to these individuals seemingly just for existing. Sometimes they are paid for their face to appear on a makeup brand or to attend a charity dinner. It’s sort of like they are selling themselves, charging us for the “pleasure” of their company. Modern day socialites include the likes of the Kardashian family and Paris Hilton – the kind of people that tabloid press like to talk about. Coming from affluent upper-class families and finding fame as a result of that, rather than their talents, socialites don’t need to take the same path in life as the rest of us – they don’t need to go out and get a job. Daddy’s wallet keeps them going…

Instead, they reel in cash by living it up in the public eye, dressing in designer outfits, attending international functions and posting selfies on social media. It’s hard to understand why socialites act they way they do – are they just incredibly self-centred? Maybe. Have they always dreamed of fame? Maybe. Have the press nursed them from a young age? Maybe.

The media uses these people as eye-candy; audiences are attracted to their lifestyles and their looks.

For me, though, the guilt of living such an extravagant lifestyle, flaunting your wealth in front of everyone else struggling to make ends meet, trapped in a modern day rat race – where’s the honour in that?
