What Makes a Great Teacher: A Student’s View

15 March 2016

By Lauren E. White

We all have that one teacher we love, and similarly, the one that we, er, don’t.

So that’s why we’ve addressed the big question: what really makes a great teacher?

1. Passion

teachers who love teaching

You can always tell a great teacher from a good teacher when it comes to the passion they show for their subject. Their lessons are filled with so much passion that it’s contagious.

2. One who understands that students are individuals

learning

We’ve all been in that position when one teacher doesn’t understand just why you aren’t learning as fast as the rest of the class. And it can be really humiliating. But a great teacher knows that their students are unique and won’t learn in the same way as their peers.

3. One who doesn’t just teach the subject

world has a lot to learn

Perhaps the mark of a truly great teacher is one who teaches you about the world and life itself. They are the remarkable ones that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

4. A teacher who provides the foundations for insight

show you where to look

When a teacher provides a student with the means to figure out their own view first, education becomes something truly special.

5. One who is hard to leave

affects eternity

Like all people who leave a footprint on your life, they are hard to leave. And if you find it difficult saying goodbye to a teacher who taught you more than just how to pass an exam, you know then that they have changed you forever.

We dedicate this article to all of the amazing teachers in the north east and the whole country. During a time when teaching can appear to be a solely paperwork-based job, your students support you and thank you for all that you do.
