Why Brexit is the Exciting Option

9 June 2016

On the 23rd June, Britain will be going to the polls to make what will arguably be the most important choice of our lifetimes. We’re being asked whether we want to stay inside the European Union (EU) or whether we want to leave the union and go it alone.

To be, or not to be: that is the question.

Staying in the EU is viewed by many as the safe yet unremarkable option, whilst Brexit is seen as a spunky and trailblazing – yet potentially foolhardy – statement of intent to not only the European Union, but the to the world.

Which of those sounds more exciting to you?

In the words of Thomas Jefferson, “Every generation needs a new revolution.”

And that’s very true. Our very human nature tells us not to accept the status quo; to always strive for better and to always push new boundaries.
And that is why Brexit is such an exciting prospect for so many of us.

Unlike the ‘Stronger in Europe’ campaign, who are trying their best to re-sell to us an organisation which has become something very different to the one we first joined in 1973. And the fact of the matter is, the status quo simply is not exciting. On the other hand, ‘Vote Leave’ is able to shout from the rooftops prophesies of a utopian country with a worldwide trading empire, total control over immigration and the precious right to govern ourselves without listening to anyone else , or – as a remain supporter might put it – in total ignorance of everyone else.

This leads us nicely onto our next point: that the remain campaign can only really inspire people by regurgitating comments made by team Brexit. Yes, there was a renegotiation, but it hasn’t quite fulfilled our expectations. They can’t stand up and promise grand new frontiers like ‘Vote Leave’ can because we’re all so familiar with the realities of life inside of the European Union. However, we don’t know what life will be like outside of the union, which is precisely what ‘Vote Leave’ has based its campaign around. Ignoring the negatives of course, they have marketed Brexit as a chance to take our country back more than anything else. A very clever trick indeed, because what is the alternative to this? Giving our country away?

In summary, Brexit is the live wire of British politics at the moment, and ‘Vote Leave’ have the unknown on their side. ‘Stronger in Europe’, on the other hand, can only try and defend an organisation which 45% of us already want to leave.

To repeat: the status quo simply is not exciting enough.
