After little more than four years, Japan is putting the Wii U to rest. The console sold 13.56 million units since 2012, which comes very short of the Wii’s sales.

The end of production is only for Japan, and there is no news yet as to when Nintendo around other parts of the globe will halt their production too. Last year, Nintendo claimed they would be stopping production of the Wii U in Japan soon, and had sent all of its Wii U shipments to the US.

It’s no surprise that the Wii U came up rather empty-handed in terms of sales. While 13 million is a lot, it’s still only a fraction of what the original Wii sold. The original Wii sold more than 101 million units, and was a massive global success, but due to the lack of titles, it petered off into nothing really.

Nintendo’s next console will be the Switch, which comes 3rd March, and is a hybrid between a console and a tablet you can take on the go. Whether it will do any better than the Wii U or the Wii, with only a handful of decent launch titles, is another question.
