Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s 14-year-old daughter has once again proven that she is wise beyond her years, as she confronts the topic of broken families in her new music video ‘Why Don’t You Cry’.

The video tells the story of a young girl, played by Willow, whose big dreams are being suppressed by her father’s pessimism. The girl argues throughout the video with her parents, and we see the effects that these fights are having on her emotional wellbeing, particularly as she begins to cry towards the end.

The song itself certainly has a vibe that is similar to some of Avril Lavignes’s earlier music, with a profound and realistic feeling.

At the end, the girl has the revelation that she should still go on to try and achieve her dreams, despite her parents’ best efforts to persuade her otherwise.

Hopefully we’ll see Willow continue to use music to inspire others to work towards their goals. It’s refreshing to hear music like this: glorifying individuality rather than drugs, alcohol and sexist attitudes.
