#YEAR12PROBLEMS

People who are only in their jobs for a power trip

As teenagers, power isn’t something that necessarily comes with our part-time jobs. But for those older than us, power is often at the centre of their careers and, in many cases, their lives.

In my humble opinion it’s not a good thing to be out on the search for power. If you’re in it for the power, you’re in it for the wrong reasons. Hence why we aren’t usually fans of politicians: we all think they’re in it for the power. And, to be fair, it certainly looks that way when the Prime Minister spends one billion pounds on making sure she’s still in power…

Other than politicians, though, there are other people who are in their jobs for the power trip; people who we will cross paths with at least once a day. Teachers are an example of this.

There are some teachers who are clearly in their jobs because they like to have power over us. Think about it: that one teacher who is always, always commenting negatively about students, who is ruthless to all of the Year Sevens for no bloody reason and who seems to have no other purpose than to knife you in the front. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Obviously not all teachers (or politicians, for that matter) are in their jobs for the power. There are some people out there who genuinely care and want to make a difference. So, in a surprising twist to the end of a column I thought was going to be extremely bitter, I’ll end differently.

Weed out those who use their power for the wrong reasons and throw them onto the pile of rotten apples. Focus on those who do good for good reasons. Don’t let the rotters get you down.

See you next week.
