Diplomacy

Very much in the Christmas spirit is kindness and friendliness. With this comes tolerance and diplomacy – two skills that everyone should be looking to develop.

Diplomacy isn’t easy. It’s something we usually talk about in relation to politicians, but it is really part of everyone’s life. Diplomacy is the ability to be tactful and sensitive when dealing with other people, regardless of conflicting opinions. It’s about respect and keeping a cool head, which, let’s be honest, is incredibly difficult with some morons.

Although I’ve related diplomacy to Christmas, it’s something you should employ into all aspects of your life. In terms of Christmas, you can be diplomatic with your family. Think of Christmas Day (or Boxing Day when I personally find everything most irritating): you’ve had your lunch and everyone’s a bit tipsy and someone has just said something and so you’re just about to lose your sh…

Don’t do it.

Instead, think back to these words about being tolerant. Don’t lose your temper, keep a calm, level head and smile and wave, boys. Be smart in how you speak to those annoying you and you probably won’t start an argument. A tentative approach is sometimes the best one. I’d put my non-existent mortgage on it.

Alternatively, if the sensitive approach just isn’t for you this Christmas and your uncle deserves it, kick off. Or take yourself away to your room for a little while to cool off. We all need it sometimes.
