The Lord of the Rings is coming to an Amazon-owned streaming service near you.

A TV adaption for The Lord of the Rings was rumoured last week but has now been confirmed by Amazon. A few companies were in the running to obtain the rights to the show, but it appears Netflix and HBO were beaten out by Amazon, who literally has infinite money.

The Peter Jackson movies made almost $6bn worldwide, winning 17 Oscars in just three movies.

The script will be helmed by Sharon Tal Ygyando, who said:

‘The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen.’

She went on to say the company was ‘thrilled’ to be taking fans on a ‘new epic journey through Middle-Earth’.

There are no details on the plot, or release dates yet or who might feature in the adaption.

The film version was released in 2001-2003, starring Elijah Wood, Sir Ian McKellan and Viggo Mortensen.

I think it’ll be really cool to see what they do with it. Personally, I would love to see it take place in the north, with Aragorn’s people. Or base it way before any of that and go into how the rings were forged.

We shall see.
