Whenever you dream about something at night, it’s more often than not your subconscious mind’s way of trying to tell you something about your emotional or spiritual well being and many people find it helpful to use dream dictionaries or interpretations to help them make sense of what their brain is communicating. For most people, certain symbols, objects, actions and places that are seen in dreams mean something specific. Here, we explain the meanings of the most common things found in dreams.

- Losing teeth: This sounds odd but in fact many people have reported having dreams about losing teeth. Luckily, dreams about losing teeth don’t have any correlation with your dental health – all they mean is that you’re stressed about something. If you try to refit the teeth back into your mouth it shows a lack of self esteem and confidence in your own ability or that you’re ashamed of the thing that is causing you stress. If your teeth fall out while eating, it shows that you feel powerless in your current situation.

- Swimming: If you want to interpret a dream that involved swimming, think about these few details: were you swimming against the tide, was the water calm and clear or stormy, were you submerged? Swimming in general signifies an exploration of your own emotions. If you’re swimming away from something, it means that you have deep emotions that you are not yet ready to address. If you are swimming away from danger, it shows that your emotions are having a huge impact on your behaviour and actions. However, being at ease while swimming shows you’re currently happy with your emotional state and you find it easy to think about your feelings. If you’re swimming underwater, you are totally engulfed in your emotions and the exploration of them; maybe you’re going through a period of change or making a big decision and need to reflect.

- Dogs: Dogs represent your relationships with other people and also characteristics such as loyalty and protection. If the dog is hostile, it means your relationships with others need work and you are too defensive to the point where others can detect it. If the dog is standoffish, it means you’re not approachable enough and difficult to form bonds with. If you’re chasing the dog it means that you take someone and their loyalty for granted.

- Falling: This represents fear of a situation that you are not yet ready to face. You feel completely out of control of the situation and powerless. It can also mean that you’ve failed to meet a personal goal and therefore should take a step back and reflect. Falling could also mean that you have been making poor decisions and these dreams are your subconscious mind’s way of telling you to start being wiser.

- Being chased: Depending on what it is that’s chasing you, being chased in a dream usually indicates that you would rather avoid a problem in your life than confront it. If you’re running from something that wants to harm you, it means that there is something in your life causing you a great deal of anxiety and stress. It also represents running away from yourself and your own emotions instead of dealing with your issues.
