Over the last few months, there have been a lot of changes to how YouTube pays creators through monetisation, and a lot of people aren’t happy about it.

Not only did this change mean that creators can no longer earn money until they reach 10,000 views on their channel, but it also meant that a lot of older videos were being demonetised, leaving creators feeling confused and anxious about the future of their channel.

Now, one of YouTube’s most influential vloggers, Casey Neistat, has criticised the service’s leaders in a new video, which you can find here.

In this video, Casey highlighted some of the issues he and many others are concerned about:

There are no answers anywhere, and there’s no-one telling you what’s going on.

The thing that was most troubling for me… was the lack of communication, the lack of transparency on the part of YouTube.

People are… putting the same amount of work, the same amount of energy and the same amount of expense into the content they’re creating, but now they’re getting paid only a fraction of what they did.

This came after one of his videos, an interview with Indonesia’s president, was temporarily demonetised last week.

Responding to the concerns, a spokeswoman for YouTube told the BBC:

We watched Casey’s video and appreciate him and the wider community voicing their concerns.

We know this has been a difficult few months, and we’re working hard to improve our systems. We’re making progress, but we know there is a lot more to do.

Neistat is certainly not the first person to speak out about YouTube’s algorithm, showing that many are concerned about the future of creators.

What do you think?
