Album Review: Ctrl

Flawes is a new London-based trio, with a sound reminiscent of Bastille, back when they were at their best – a comparison which is helped as singer Josh Curruthers’s voice sounds so similar to Dan Smith’s. Bastille fell down when they produced their own material, but as Ctrl demonstrates, Flawes are perfectly capable songwriters.

The EP features four tracks: ‘Consolation’, ‘Misunderstood’, ‘Speak up Now’ and ‘I Remember’. All the tracks showcase different sounds from a variety of different influences. ‘Consolation’ and ‘Misunderstood’ are electro-pop at its finest, complete with catchy choruses, bouncy synthesizers and straightforward rhythms. The third track, ‘Speak up Now’ veers in a slightly different direction: it begins with fewer layers, and so attention is brought to the heavy saw bass-line. The final song is less dark, despite having lyrics about wasting time. The instrumentation over which Curruthers croons makes ‘I Remember’ ultimately sound hopeful.

Ctrl is an impressive EP, with Flawes opting for quality over quantity. Hopefully as Flawes keep producing music, they will keep to the standards they have set for themselves.
