Album Review: Get Weird

Little Mix’s latest album Get Weird has sold more copies than One Direction’s final album Made in the A.M. It achieved unprecedented success, particularly when the lack of promotion is taken into account, showing the true force the girl group possesses.

Unless you have been hiding under a rock for a while, you will have heard ‘Black Magic’ – the first single from Get Weird. The smash-hit track is a brilliant slice of pop music and effectively balances the bubble-gum with a darker theme of love. If it wasn’t for stronger competition at the BRITs this year, Little Mix would’ve taken an award away for ‘Black Magic’.

Get Weird also has an inspiring message for the group’s young and female fans. Many of them are approaching adolescence or experiencing it, meaning songs like ‘I Won’t’ are really appreciated when it comes to boosting their self-esteem.

While some fans are young, sexual themes run through Little Mix’s album very subtly. ‘A.D.I.D.A.S’ explores sexuality in a very euphemistic way and tells girls that it’s fine to explore their sexuality when they’re ready and in their own time. To counter this, ‘Hair’ and ‘Grown’ tell fans that it’s possible to exist without a man in their life.

Get Weird is a great effort from the Little Mix girls and once again emphasises that they are fantastic role models for the young women of this generation. Strong, empowering tracks fill this album and the band should be commended for it. Girl power.
