Album Review: low kii savage

After a short break, I’m back writing for b**p, starting with a few reviews of albums that I’ve been listening to recently. The first one up is Kiiara’s EP, which was released two days ago: low kii savage.

low kii savage incorporates pop, R&B, and electronic elements, with a sound similar to Drake or The Weeknd’s early work. At best, Kiiara has a mysterious, sultry sound, and at worst her tracks are forgettable and confused.

The EP opens with Kiiara’s already popular track, ‘Gold’, which now has an official music video to go with it. ‘Gold’ features minimal instrumentation, with a stripped back beat accompanying Kiiara’s floaty vocals which are often chopped and looped (think of Jack Ü’s ‘Where Are Ü Now’).

The other good tracks on low kii savage experiment with Kiiara’s voice in a similar manner: in ‘Feels’ Kiiara’s voice is distorted, ‘Tennessee’ uses more looping and distortion, and ‘Hang up tha phone’ features a whole synth based on Kiiara’s voice. ‘Intention’ and ‘Say anymore’ drift towards the pop end of the spectrum, sacrificing musical quality for the lyric’s clarity.

Overall low kii savage is a solid debut EP that shows Kiiara as a huge talent to look out for. Especially given the popularity of ‘Gold’, and that Kiiara is already signed to Atlantic’s Stateside division. Here’s hoping that she builds on and develops her own unique sound.

Top three tracks: ‘Gold’, ‘Feels’, ‘Hang up tha phone’.
