Hull is set to become the City Of Culture for a mass nude photograph. (Maybe slightly NSFW? But it’s art, so it’s okay?)

Yep.

A New York-based artist, Spencer Tunick, has created more than 90 photographs worldwide, depicting mass nude gatherings. The photographer is said to recreate some of his work in Hull to celebrate its year as UK’s City of Culture.

The images are rather… serene.

Organizers hope hundreds of people will go bare-naked to become part of this project, entitled ‘Sea of Hull’.

Participants are to be covered in cosmetic make-up, before assembling in groups to make multiple colours of the sea, and create abstract shapes for the camera.

Tunick hopes this will create a “sea of humanity flooding the urban landscape”.

Well at least it was sunny? Right?

“I’m very interested in the history of the city and its place as a seafaring centre and its relationship to a rich maritime past,” Tunick said of Hull.”It intrigues me that in some places where there are major streets or parks today, previously there was water.”

He also said he hoped the body paint would help many overcome their inhibitions of posing in the nip.

Kirsten Simister, from Hull’s Ferens Art Gallery, said: “It’s an opportunity to involve people directly in an amazing live performance that will temporarily transform the city.”

Anyone over the age of 18 is free to take part.
