Are ‘Starter Homes’ Another Mistake by Cameron?

In a bid to gain public support, David Cameron has vowed to spend his remaining time in office tackling the poverty problem. Alongside this, he stated that he wanted an end to discrimination, tackling many ‘big social problems’ in Britain. He also confirmed that they would be continuing to develop plans to replace nuclear weapons – a decision which has been frowned upon by many.

Another plan that many people are concerned about is the decision to have ‘starter homes’ for first-time buyers under 40. While this scheme can be considered a good idea, as many first-time buyers will be almost guaranteed a property for no more than £250,000 – 450,000, it will be a nightmare for tenants. It is argued that some families will be unable to pay these costs, forcing them onto the streets. While those who earn a significant amount of money will be in luck through this scheme, the majority of people earning an average income will not, according to housing charity Shelter. A more sensible idea would be to produce genuinely affordable housing to ensure that almost everyone can afford a home, and would not have to worry about where they will sleep.

As plans for this go ahead, it is simply a waiting game to see if the government change their mind due to the negative public response, but as ever, this seems unlikely.
