Cancelled Maul Art

Aw man, this looked cool.

It’s a sad story if we look back at all the cancelled Star Wars games. From the supposed KOTOR III and the likes of Star Wars: 1313, it’s a long tragic tale of liquidation and ‘so close but so far away’.

The newest game to be revealed would be Star Wars: Maul, which was in the making way back in 2011, during the merge with Disney. Due to the merge, LucasArts decided to shut the project down after a year of development, and now the primary game publisher for Star Wars is EA.

Which was a great decision. *Sarcasm*.

But, after nearly six years, artist Thomas A. Szakolczay, has released some of the concept art, and even a few gameplay clips for the game. He says at the bottom of his page:

“Back in 2011, I was fortunate enough to work with LucasArts and Redfly Studios to help develop the look direction for a new Star Wars IP that centered around Darth Maul. It took place in a future time line sometime after Return of the Jedi and was meant to have a darker, grittier tone. Unfortunately, the project was conceived around the same time as the Disney acquisition. It was cancelled after one year of development. Definitely dream of getting the opportunity to work on another Star Wars related project, so much fun!”

Let’s have a look at some of the coolest stuff he released.

It’s a shame it was cancelled because this looked really cool.

Also, check out the interview Game Informer did with Joe Juba, who was involved in the game’s development.
