The Lego Batman Movie has beaten Fifty Shades Darker this weekend, in what folks are calling ‘a turn for the better for 2017’.

They aren’t really. This is just fantastic news.

Yes, the most recent Lego movie has topped the box office charts, beating Fifty Shades, John Wick, and Split. It took the spot with $55.6m (£44.4m), while the erotic fiction adaptation took in $46.8m (£37.4m).

The reviews for EL James’s adaption have not exactly been fantastic.

The Telegraph called it “all smoke no fire”, The Independent called it “utterly threadbare”. Rolling Stone went with “this softcore is still hardcore awful”. You get the idea.

The second John Wick movie came in third at the end of the weekend, at $30m (£24m), and reviews for that are rather good. With this success, it’s looking likely that we’ll get the third movie that was talked about recently.

So yeah, a pretty good day for movies.
