Biography: Theresa May

Theresa May (née Brasier) was born on the 1st October 1956 in Sussex. She attended a variety of schools in Oxfordshire before going on to study geography at St. Hugh’s College, Oxford. After university she worked for the Bank of England in a number of roles, and stood for a number of parliamentary seats before becoming MP for Maidenhead, Berkshire in 1997. She filled a number of shadow cabinet roles throughout the Conservative leaderships of William Hague, Iain Duncan Smith, Michael Howard and David Cameron, eventually becoming the Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and after the Conservative victory in the 2010 General Election was appointed Home Secretary.

But why should you care about who she is? Well, the Home Secretary is responsible for, among other things, policy regarding the police, the drug laws, immigration and citizenship. The Security Service, MI5, which deals with counter-terrorism, counter-espionage and cyber security, is accountable directly to the Home Secretary, and the role is one of the four Great Offices of State which are considered the most powerful positions in the British government.
