It’s nice to know we live in a world where racially motivated attempted poisonings result in the perpetrator being given jail time and a criminal record. Wait- it seems that in the US, you can get away with doing this if you have a really good lawyer and can turn on the tears in court.

Back in November last year, ex-University of Hartford student, Brianna Brochu, was caught attempting to poison and intimidate her roommate, Chennel “Jazzy” Rowe, by “spitting in her coconut oil, putting mouldy clam dip in her lotions, rubbing used tampons oh [sic] her backpack, putting her toothbrush places where the sun doesn’t shine”.

It was assumed that Brochu would receive a harsh sentence, given that Rowe became unwell and could have suffered long-term health problems, but alas, the US justice system never fails to disappoint.

The felonies she should have been convicted for were hate crime, criminal mischief, breach of peace and second-degree intimidation which would have amounted to over 6 years in prison. Instead, Brochu only has to do 200 hours of community service and go 2 years without getting into anymore legal trouble. After this period, she won’t even have a criminal record.

Rowe was the victim of a hate crime, despite what the court says. This is very clear from Brochu’s Instagram posts during the time the two were still roommates.

Just because the legal system forgave Brochu doesn’t mean the Internet will. This Twitter user suggests that we make ‘Brianna Brochu’ a household name so that employers and any other people that she comes into contact with will know what she has done.

If the roles were reversed, and a black person attempted to poison a white person, it is likely that the perpetrator in that instance would be treated much more harshly. The US justice system is deeply flawed and anybody who disagrees need only look at Brianna Brochu.
