Liverpool’s hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the Champions League have been destroyed after they failed to beat Basel last night.

The reds have only managed to win one game out of six in group B and had to secure all three points in their game at home to proceed further in the competition.

Basel managed to stay 1-0 up throughout most of the game and moments after Liverpool’s substitute Lazar Markovic was sent off. This was already a set back for Brendan Rogers’ side.

Despite it seeming virtually impossible that Liverpool could pull one back with only 10 men, the experience skipper Steven Gerrard equalised through an outstanding free kick, in the 80th minute.

Liverpool pushed on for the remainder of the game but couldn’t seem to find an equaliser, leaving them two points short of qualifying for the knock out phase.

Rogers side will now compete in the Europa league but after their recent disappointment will have to come up with some magic and quick.
