Comic Relief raised the highest total that has ever been raised on red nose day this year. The total amount was £78m at the end of Friday’s show. £ 1 billion pounds has been raised in the 30 years of day’s existence and is said to have helped about 50 million people in total. Lenny Henry – who co-founded Comic Relief with writer and director Richard Curtis in 1985 – has hosted the show since it was first held in 1988.
Dermot O’Leary, just one of the thousands of people who was doing something for the day raised more than £643,336 by non-stop dancing outside BBC Broadcasting House. When his fundraising total was revealed live on BBC One, he welled up with tears.
