Due to an IT glitch over the bank holiday weekend, up to 75,000 passengers were left stranded or delayed when travelling with British Airways. If you were affected, you have a number of options – you might not realise that you could be eligible to claim hundreds of pounds!

According to Hannah Maundrell, editor in chief of money.co.uk:

“What dreadful timing for BA – half term is one of the busiest times of the year and it’s incredibly frustrating for travellers. If you’re affected it’s important to look at what your options are – you could get up to €600 per person in compensation so it’s worth pursuing. Don’t be one of the 70% of passengers who don’t put in a claim.

“It’s best not to go via a claims company because they’ll take a massive cut. Contact BA direct and ask to make a claim if your flight was delayed over three hours. If your claim is rejected, don’t give up; you can escalate your case to the Civil Aviation Authority who will make sure you’ve been treated fairly.

“If your other travel plans were impacted, look to your travel insurance for cover. This is when having a decent policy really comes in handy. You might get compensation for the bare essentials from your airline, but you’re likely to get more from your insurance company.”

If you were delayed for over three hours, you could claim compensation.

  • If your flight is/was travelling up to 1,500km, you can claim up to €250 compensation (if delayed more than three hours).
  • Up to €400 for flights within the European Union which are more than 1,500km AND for all flights between 1,500km and 3,500km.
  • For any flights longer than 3,500km, you can claim €600.

However, your claim may be reduced if British Airways offered you a reasonable alternative at the time.

Regardless, you can file a claim here – it’s definitely worth querying, as you could get more than expected!
