Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke have both been charged £4.35m ($7.3m) for copyright infringement.
The decision was made after a week long trial where the jury were asked to compare the similarities between ‘Blurred Lines’ and Marvin Gaye’s 1977 song ‘Got To Give it Up.’
Gaye’s children sued the pair for copyright infringement for the biggest hit of 2013 but the duo denied they had used Gaye’s music to write the single. However Pharell Williams did say in court that he had Marvin Gaye in mind when writing the music to the controversial hit.
Williams told jurors Gaye’s music was part of his youth but claims he didn’t copy any of it. The seven times Grammy winner and Robin Thicke earned more than $5 million each for ‘Blurred Lines.’
Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father Marvin Gay Sr back in 1984 leaving his children the rights to his music in his will.
