For the first time in 26 years, a West Highland Terrier has been named Best In Show at Crufts. To make things even better: although the winner was named Devon, she was also nicknamed Geordie Girl.

There is no doubt that the win was exciting for many of us up North, with Ant and Dec even commenting on the event themselves.

“Told you!!! Yess, Geordie Girl wins Best in Show!”

“Yay #GeordieGirl! What a belter!”

This year, the event was held at Birmingham NEC, with over 22,000 dogs involved in a celebration of its 125th birthday.

On receiving the announcement that Geordie Girl had won, owner Marie Burns, having attending the competition for the first time this year, commented:

“To win Best in Show, I don’t think you can find the words to describe it, it’s just unreal, you know. I mean I think it’s every dog show exhibitor’s dream, to be standing here, and you just don’t think it’s ever going to happen to you, and I don’t think it will sink it till I watch it on TV,”

The runner-up was Hazel the Whippet, with her owner Charlie Donaldson from Middlebie, Dumfriesshire, alongside six other finalists.

As the world’s largest dog show, the four-day Kennel Club competition is certainly an interesting and exciting event, particularly for dog-lovers, but the connection to the North East makes it all that little bit better, as I’m sure you will all agree!
