Developers at id Software have spoken about why the studio dropped its concept for Doom 4. Id Software designer Kevin Cloud, who had a very high level of creative control on the game, said that Doom 4 did not feel like it should be part of the franchise due to its story and scope.

“We explored a direction and got to a certain point and felt like this really wasn’t capturing what we felt like was going to be a strong Doom and what the fans would want from it.”

One of the core aspects of any game would be the relation to the game and the inhabitants of said game, and also the players’ connection. If the player has no connection to this world, why bother playing?

It sounds as though Doom 4 was going to originally be something of a Call of Duty-esque shooter, however early reports, way back in 2012, say it was going to be an open world survival.

Producer Marty Stratton even acknowledged that the undeveloped game had a Call of Doom feel to it.

“It was much closer to something like that type of game,” he said. “A lot more cinematic; a lot more story to it. A lot more characters around you that you were with throughout the course of the game. Definitely a different setting–it took place on Earth.”

The undeveloped game was going to have “unbelievable” production values. Stratton said that some of the mechanics included shooting zombies and even cover based combat. Which is totally not what DOOM ended up being. Bethesda confirmed in 2013 that development of the Doom franchise had been rebooted, then came back with DOOM this year in Maywhich was a wonderful experience of bludgeoning demons, and blowing up monsters.
