Around 63% of the UK population aged 17+ holds a full driving licence, and in order to get a licence, one must learn to drive (obviously). Lots of people have private tuition, but the majority of people undergo driving lessons from a driving instructor. As with most industries, the driving instruction industry has its own collection of fraudsters and a lot of instructors will think nothing of taking advantage of you in order to squeeze every penny they can possibly get out of you. So here are some common things you’ll notice if your driving instructor is a rip off:

Dragging out lessons – some instructors don’t even let you drive away from your door until the tenth lesson and this is ridiculous. They should be quickly and efficiently teaching you and not wasting your time.

Short lessons – some schools charge you by the lesson and not the hour, which is good if your lessons are between 1 and 2 hours, but for lessons that only last 45 minutes or so, it’s bad news.

High pass rates – some driving schools will manipulate figures to act as if they have a high amount of pupils passing. For example, they may class a person who failed 3 tests and passed the fourth as a 100% success rate.

“Pass in five days” – as with anything in life, learning to become a skilled driver takes time, patience and a lot of effort. There’s no way you can safely and competently navigate a road after only five days.
